Anyone who knows me knows I am all about clean, healthy food and I am, but the same thoughts can be applied to money! When you are hungry, are you really hungry or is it that you are thirsty? And the same can happen with money. Really. As I write this, I am in front of a totally vegan salad: 3 cups hydroponic butter lettuce grown locally—I really do know the farmer —1 cup broccoli, 1 cup carrots, 1 cup mushrooms, 1 cup kidney beans, and 1 tablespoon poppy seed dressing. Simple or gluttonous? For me, it is pure clean healthy simplicity. But there is also 16 ounces of filtered lemon water. It all balances out. With money there are needs and wants and there needs to be a balance. If you spend everything on wants, you will be wanting when it comes to your needs. Just like food, find the balance—it is personal, and learn what money is all about and don’t risk being hungry or thirsty!
Shiny Object Syndrome can hit at any time,,,it sure can! That shiny object can be as small as a holiday tree ornament or as large as a new home or new car! And most shiny objects are not “needs”; they are definitely “wants”. And what can the cure for this be?
A long time ago I addressed this question when my EMPOWER course was created: it is a “simple” discussion of “needs” and “wants” and how to differentiate between them. Is it a cure? I am sure that many folks could continue on in their quest of the next new shiny object, but it does give you reason to pause and question your personal motivation for the desire for the “shiny object”.
But, “abundance” when cited can be the underlying solution. And, when I talk about “abundance”, it is not simply money that is being referred to. Abundance can be all of the gifts of The Universe. For example, in 60 seconds, I will name just a few: sun, moon, clouds, water, wind, air, friends, trees, plants, mountains, heat, cold, family, home, travel, love, faith, happiness, money, etc. And I am sure you can mention many more including health!
The “needs” are basic: food, clothing, shelter; refer back to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. But they are also personal as to what part of the “needs” are basic and when do they become “wants”. Something to ponder indeed.
Another part of the solution or the “shiny object syndrome” is gratitude. And that can be as simple as being thankful that I am able to write a blog that makes sense, and it is also having the technology and vehicle to share my blog. So thank you, and I will be aware of my abundance and offer gratitude for it.

When it comes to money, everybody wants to tell you how to invest, how to save, how to retire rich. That is like telling someone that they will be well every day of their life. Does not happen that way. Life is a balancing act. Life is ups and downs. Life is learning as we go. We know we want to be well physically and emotionally, but sometimes life gets in the way. It is the same with financial wellness. We all know that there are things we need, that there are things we want, but we hold onto our dreams, hoping that it will all come together.
Financial wellness to banks is having a checking account and a savings account and a financial planner with the bank–they want it all, they want all of your money that it. That is their business. Financial wellness to a financial professional is having all of your assets with them so that they can guide you through the needs, the wants, and the dream. That is their business. And then there is basic financial wellness.
Basic financial wellness is you feeling good, feeling confident thinking and talking about money and YOUR money. That is financial wellness. It is the empowerment tool for you to talk with anyone at any time about money, including your banker and your financial professional. It is the basic tool to learn about everything YOU need to know about money…It is YOU in the raw about money. This is you in your light and feeling good with the people who surround you because they appreciate you in the raw.
It is two days until Valentine’s Day, and there are many different reactions to this infamous day. Much of it depends upon your relationship status: young and single, single, divorced, married, in a relationship gone bad, and more…
Speaking as a person with a professional interest in seeing relationships work, I know that there are many who are very uncomfortable with this day. I am not speaking about how I feel except that I am quite happy with my life, and there is lots of love I am sharing with grandsons, sons, daughter, friends, and others. It is a regular day as I try to include love in my life daily.
Later today I am off to a Chocolate and Wine party…I love both chocolate and wine in moderation! I am single, and I have been young and in love, married happily and unhappily, and divorced as a single parent living on the edge, but I still found love, or a semblance of it. All of this living has given me a very different perspective as I work with singles and couples in terms of their money relationships. And the money is always there, right with every person in love or not.
MONEY can make or break a person or a relationship. And MONEY enters the relationship in many different ways: too much MONEY, not enough MONEY, differing views on MONEY, MONEY as a weapon, as a negotiating tool, and more.
MONEY also comes with baggage: cultural, spiritual, religious, fear, love, and disgust. Getting through the emotions to treasure any relationship, including a relationship with MONEY, takes patience, time, and love. But it also can bring a relationship to a point where there is no need, no want, or no hope to continue. That is when Valentine’s Day is sad…
You are now on a money journey…
You have created a list of how you spend your money…
Go to the next step…prioritize everything on your list as a “Need” or a “Want.”
This is the easy step…after all, it is the weekend!
Do you know your numbers? While attending a regional wellness program this morning, the discussion turned to “knowing your numbers”, and you do need to know your numbers regarding your wellness; but you also need to know your financial numbers. Really, you do. And I am not talking about your checking account, your savings account, or your credit card. At least, not to start with!
The numbers you need to know to start are the “NEED NUMBERS”. What does it take for you to live, just live?
Before you can dare to dream, you need to live. I challenge you today to dream. I challenge you to dream about your happiness. But, first, look at the numbers; know your numbers to live.
And then, let’s talk about how to act to know, to dream, to act to find your happiness.
Can you find your numbers?
Light is the only energy we can see. Colors are powerful manifestations connected to parts of our body. Each color affects us mentally, physically, and emotionally. Energy work takes on many forms, but simple colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet, can also have an effect on our energy.
My logo for Empower Excellence was created with this in mind. Following my morning meditation, it became clear that sharing the colors and their significance was my mission for the day. I am beginning that mission today with the color green!
To begin anything, we need to feel balanced in a very basic way. We need love. We need self control. Self control includes discipline. To begin any small work to change our energy requires discipline. The simple example of getting out of bed in the morning–that requires discipline. It requires self-control. There is a balance of what we want and what we know we need to do. It is the very basic demonstration of need versus want. If we want to accomplish what we need to accomplish, we have to start the day. It may not seem like love when you are getting out of bed, but in the end it is love for yourself: doing what is best for you to do at this moment. Whether it is getting up to take care of your family, going to school, or going to work, it is all a matter of self-control, love, and balance to accomplish what is yours to do in a day.
While we cannot see the positive energy that evolves from these simple actions, we can feel that energy. We can see the green in nature in all seasons. But feeling the energies what propels us to do what we need to do, even if what we need to do is something we do not necessarily want to do! Be green today, feel the energy, and maybe see energy in “light”…

A loving family is something we all work towards, want, and nurture…we are always parents, and our children are always our children no matter how old they are or how old we are!
Economic conditions sometimes call upon that family connection to take care of each other. But, when adult children continue to be children looking to family to continually support their lives, it can become a problem. Parents are living longer and need their money longer. If financial drains become financial sewers, it may be time to sit down as a family to discuss a Family Spending Plan.
Each family member has their own needs, their own wants, and their own dreams. Each family member is to be respected in this communication. But then, the FAMILY Needs, Wants, and Dreams need to be considered while respecting the individual family members’ needs, wants, and dreams. It is now when COMMUNICATION and COMPROMISE within the family needs to be uppermost in each person’s conversation. It is time to close the BANK and to figure out as a family how to continue on so all members feel okay with the individual and family decisions. And then it is time to CELEBRATE as a Family as each person realizes their needs, wants, and dreams.
STOP THE FIGHTING, START SHARING YOUR NEEDS, WANTS, AND DREAMS
BEGIN TO REALIZE AS A FAMILY THAT CLOSING THE BANK OF MOM AND DAD IS A GOOD THING!
