STRESS! What’s MONEY got to do with it?

STRESS Presentation May 7 2017-page0001

After a one day hiatus due to recovering from oral surgery, I wanted to interject a blog dealing with STRESS and the role Finances play.  Why today?  Well, before we continue on with money and children, it is so important to know that relationships with children and spouses are highly affected by money!  But I am sure, if you stop and think, you already know this.  There have been many times I have referred to money as THE BIG GREEN ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM:  Nobody talks about it, but everybody knows that it is there.  It is a touchy subject.  If it is talked about, it is the center of the argument, and temperaments are so enraged already about money that there is little hope of a sensible discussion.

STRESS, when not understood and in an appropriate place in your life can be overwhelming.  It affects all parts of your life.  That is why money is so related to STRESS because it, too, is in all parts of your life.  If the money in your life is not in a good place, it can be very overwhelming because it is affecting many parts of your life.

So, how do finances play a role:

  • Health
  • Nutrition
  • Clothing
  • Housing
  • Work
  • Education
  • Transportation
  • Relaxation
  • Physical Activity
  • Religion
  • Sex

And I am sure that there are many more areas that are inter-related with money and STRESS!

How does money play a role in being overwhelmed and stressed?

  • Not enough money
  • Working too hard for money
  • Not able to work for money
  • Losing your job
  • Life goals
  • Conflicting values

And there are more…

SO HOW DO YOU REDUCE FINANCIAL STRESS?

  1. BECOME AWARE OF THE STRESS AND THE ROLE MONEY PLAYS IN IT
  2. THINK IT THROUGH
  3. WHO IS INVOLVED IN THIS
  4. BRING EVERYONE TOGETHER TO DISCUSS THEIR VIEW OF IT
  5. FIND THE WAYS YOU CAN WORK TOGETHER
  6. COLLABORATE
  7. COMMUNICATE
  8. COMPROMISE

This process begins the path to reducing the stress by involving all who should be involved in the discussion on money and its role in the stress and feeling overwhelmed.  Children may or may not be involved depending on the “stressful situation”.  If they are old enough and directly involved in the situation, they should be brought into the discussion; not the hysteria, not the arguing, not the fighting.  They can be brought into the discussion if appropriate.  They can be part of a solution.  But wait to include them until you have a clear picture of what is really happening.

If STRESS is involved in any of the areas listed earlier, remove the financial stress, and many other situations can be worked out step by step to relieve the overall stress in your life.  Start with this first step!
